Bellany, John
Portrait of Sir Walter Scott
Edinburgh: Cannongate, 2001
50 x 40cm digital print using archival 300 gsm cotton rag art paper. Signed and numbered from a small edition of 100. Bellany's work appropriates Scott's likeness from Raeburn but places him in an East Lothian setting with fisherwives (as opposed to Midlothian). Celtic neo-expressionism from one of Scotland's best known artists who has happily recovered fully from his recent heart and lung transplant.

Byrne, John
Portrait of James Kelman
Edinburgh: Cannongate, 2001
50 x 40cm digital print using archival inks on 300 gsm cotton rag art paper. Signed and numbered from a small edition of 100. Byrne is a poet, writer, dramatist, director, actor, by far Scotland's foremost living watercolourist and versatile artist. Here his subject is a painting of his fellow writer Kelman - winner of the Brooker Prize and Scots realist - craggy in visage and polemic. ByrneÕs rough, painterly treatment matches its subject.

Portrait of Robert Burns (after Skirving)
Edinburgh: Cannongate, 2001

Colvin is known for his photographic assemblages which when photographed, literally, give a larger picture of his true subject matter. Colvin's best laid plans have not gone awry in this work where Burns' handsome face (after Skirving's portrait) emerges from the painted bookcase and other living room debris that physically and metaphorically underlies the work.

Damien Hirst
Mirror
Unique work. Oil and collage on found mirror 1986
Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the previous owner. 76 x 86 cm / 30 x 33 inches approx. Inscribed "MOOSE" This painting was constructed from objects acquired from the house of Mr Barnes, Hirst's next-door neighbour in the period between school and art college. Amply described in Stuart Morgan's essay for the catalogue of In and Out of Love, Hirst's 1991 exhibition, it demonstrates the emergence of two strands of his work, an interest in the work of Kurt Schwitters and an investigation into the use of colours chosen entirely intuitively. From these two apparently disparate themes came the development of the spot paintings. For a full discussion of this period of the artist's work, see D. Hirst "I want to Spend the Rest of My Life Everywhere, With Everyone, One to One, Always, Forever, Now" London 1997, pp.68-73

The content is typically minimalist, replicating various photographs of bright candle flames, with 20 b/w plates reproduced on acetate (with white cards in between acetate reproductions) in such a way that when held up to the light the brilliance of the original flame is returned to life in the photograph. Fold out is a two-page full colour, gatefold reproduction of the exhibition installation. Scarce. Fine estate.
