Bachelard,
Gaston.
LA TERRE ET LES REVERIES DE LA VOLONTE.
Paris: Corti, 1948.
8vo. Original wrappers. First edition (preceded by only 30 large paper copies)
of this crucial phenomenological excursion by the gifted psychoanalyst thinker
cum literary theoretician. Bachelards exquisitely personal text analyses are
in the reading associative alchemical evocations of the word as outwardly projected
and simultaneously internalized animate signifier within any given territory
("a reverie is inseparable from the language in which it is dreamed", par example).
This copy with a superb 2pp. autographed letter from the author to the modernist
poet Noel Bureau, in response to the latter having sent Bachelard a series of
poems, which may be of interest thematically to his ongoing work, and which
(in his always exacting style) Bachelard discusses indirectly, among other topics.
This ALS has been carefully tipped onto the free-flyleaf of the volume, and
neatly unfolds for examination. The volume itself exhibits some minor wear to
wrappers, else is in very good estate. Substantial articles of correspondence
from Bachelard do not often appear on the market. Unique thus.

LES CHAMPS MAGNETIQUES.
Paris: Au sans Pareil, 1920.
8vo. 120pp. Original wrappers. The 'stated' second issue (of 120 copies), following
(about three months before) the first edition of 180 examples. Produced in late
1919, while both authors were engaged in the Parisian Dada adventure. This work
was directly influenced by their crucial (to the Surrealist family tree that
is) re-reading of Lautremont's 'Chants de Maldoror' and 'Poesies'; the latter
which Breton had copied out by hand from the (then) only known copy of the first
edition deposited in the Bibliotheque Nationale. 'Les Champs Magnetiques' is
(traditionally) considered to be the inaugural Surrealist text collection, as
it embodies the later movement's automatic/mediumistic methodology. Chronologically,
this is Breton's second published book and Soupault's third. Some minor wear
to wrappers, typical internal browning (owing to stock quality), else a very
good example of this landmark work. Rare.

L'IMMACULEE CONCEPTION.
Paris: Editions Surrealistes, 1930.
19 x 24cm. 124pp. Pictorial wrappers designed by Salvador Dali. First edition
of this, one of the most important collaborative Surrealist works. In part,
an attempt to simulate various psychic disorders, in order to demonstrate not
only the apparent non-existence of barriers between the 'normal' and 'abnormal',
but also the capacity of the mind to exceed by poetic means, the conventional
boundaries of 'normal' thought. "If the First and Second (Surrealist) Manifestos
are the exposition of the manifest content of the Surrealist dream, 'The Immaculate
Conception' is its latent content". (Breton). One of 2000 examples on papier
imponderable des papeteries Sorel-Moussel, apart from 116 'du tete'. The cover
design by Dali is reproduced at the title page, and the artist's 'paranoic-critical
method' definitely informed Breton and Eluard's experiments herein. An unusually
fine example of this keynote publication.

LE SURREALISME REVOLUTIONNAIRE.
No. 1 (all published).
Paris: Le Bureau International du Surrealisme Revolutionnarie, 1948.
21 x 29 cm .
48pp. 28 b/w illustrations. Tri-color printed wrappers. The first and only issue
of this 'renegade' Surrealist journal. The Surrealisme Revolutionnaire group
was co-founded by Christian Dotremont (Brussels) & Noel Arnaud (Paris) in June
of 1947 with the publication of the pamphlet 'Pas de Quartiers dans la Revolution!'
(text by Dotremont and Jean Seeger), which was co-signed by Marcel Broodthaers,
Irene Hamoir, Rene Magritte, Paul Nouge, among others. The group was also responsible
for the infamous interventionist catalogue-response to the monumental international
Surrealist exhibition ('Surrealisme en 1947') held in Paris in 1947; a biting
attack upon the established group's conformity to tried and true activities
and styles. 'Le Surrealisme Revolutionnaire' is composed of texts by Broodthaers,
Achille Chavee, Dotremont, Paul Colinet, Edouard Jaguer, Raymond Queneau, Tristan
Tzara, et. al., and illustrations by Max Bucaille, Asger Jorn, Richard Mortenson,
among others. A considerable document of the polemic schism between Surrealist
generations and old comrades and the early manifestations of Cobra group activity.
The text contribution by Broodthaers is one of his earliest published pieces
(preceding his first book of poems by nine years). A very good+ example of this
scarce and fragile journal.

AVEUX NON AVENUS. Illustre dHelio-gravures Composees par
Moore dapres les projets de LAuteur. Preface par Pierre Mac Orlan.
Paris: Carrefour, 1930.
Large 8vo. 237pp. 9 full-page duotone photomontages + one photograph (as afterword).
Wrappers with a three-color typographic design (back and front) incorporating
the title and authors name in various combinations. First edition of the author
and artists second book (preceded only by the bibliographic rarity Vues et
Visions, 1919). One of 445 numbered examples (total edition). Arguably, the
most mysterious figure of the Surrealist milieu, Cahun brought an intense sexual
ambivalence, dissidence, and broad sense of the absurd to both her Surrealist
writings and work in photography and montage. The photomontages included here
incorporate many self-portraits, which are manipulated and in one instance repeated
as many eight times. This project was carried out by Cahun in collaboration
with her long time companion Moore (Suzanne Malherbe). In 1939 Cahun exiled
herself to the island of Jersey, where she was still living as of the mid-50s.

Executed while still in her teens, the works offered here represent some of Carringtons earliest (extant) stylistic investigations. In 1937 Carrington joined the Surrealist group. Within this milieu, her well-documented and tumultuous romantic and decisive creative collaborations with Max Ernst were founded. This is notable, given that the pieces offered here were initially possessed by Max Ernst, and thus could (possibly) be considered as gestural gifts. In any speculative event, such early works by Carrington are a rare and wonderful documentary find. Images upon request.

Paris: Pauvert, 1958.
8vo. 240pp. Textual illustrations in b/w by Max Walter Svanberg. Wrappers with
a pictorial design by Svanberg. First trade edition of this remarkable Surrealist
narrative. Mansour was arguably the most important female proponent of the movement's

of eroticism (in extremis) and Feminist discourse. Svanberg's images more than
complement the complex alchemy of Mansour's text. Laid into this example is
the rare pre-publication prospectus (1pp., 22.5 x 30cm), inclusive of four striking
photo-portraits of Mansour framed by poetic text; recto with elogious reviews

Small 4to. 57pp. Typographic design and 25 full-page b/w photomontages by Karel
Teige (incorporating photographs by K. Raspa). Original wrappers (also) designed
by Teige. First edition of the famous and (arguably) most innovative livre d'artiste
of the Czech avant-garde between the wars. Composed of poems by Nezval (original
published in 'Pantomime', 1924), accompanied by stunning photomontages by Teige,
which incorporate framed images of the dancer Milia Mayerova performing her
choreographed 'alphabet' (a to zed) action-poem, which she debuted on the occasion
of the 'Nezval evening' at the Liberated Theatre (April 14, 1926). Nezval's
preface underscores the subtext of what has in some circles become a post-Constructivist
icon of Eastern European book production: "In 1922, during the survey of meaning
in modern poetry, when the factions defending or rejecting the so-called 'proletarian
poetry' opposed one another, and when it seemed possible to give poetry a new
life through new content, I attempted to react to the ideological concepts by
rejecting all themes in favor of a spiritual exercise in which poetry is the
most subjectless of objects: 'a letter'". This example inscribed by Mayerova

LA 'PATAPHYSIQUE EST LA FIN DES FINS
A scarce archive
The College du Pataphysique was an avant garde movement/grouping inspired by Alfred Jarry's writings. Formed in december 1948 in Reims by an assorted group of professors and intellectuals the ranks of the College have included some of the msot important minds in modern French and international thought: Queneau, Shattrick, Rene Clair, Michel Leiris, Jacques Prevert and many others have been associated with the grouping including Dubuffet and Marcel Duchamp. "'Pataphysics" was defined by Jarry as "the science of imaginary solutions" and the College continued this tradition by turning out a long running series of publications which promoted the absurd in literature as a way of providing a radical social and psychological critique. Publications were experimental in design, typography, papers employed, format (small book formats were particularly interesting) and in number (absurdist edition sizes were common). Humour was always to the forefront and many of the works selected for reprinting or translation are very loosely re-worked. The College enjoyed a recreation of the calendar - often dating items relative to the birth of their hero. More normal dates and that aspect of society in general which didnt get the joke were often regarded and entitled "vulgar"! Below we offer a substantial and significant small archive (53 separate items many scarce or sometimes rare) of 'pataphysique publications covering the full range of activities of members (from literature, architecture, science, geography, translation, music, even game-creation), showing a full range of book productions and spanning the entire range of the College's existence. PORTRAIT. Digte og tekeninger af Eric Reiff. Musik af Borge
Roger Henrichsen og Helge Jacobson.
Kopenhagen: Helios, 1945.
4to. 64 pp. Original lithograph printed entirely in blue throughout by Reiff.
Original boards with mounted original lithograph in blue. First edition. One
of 500 examples of this Danish pre-Cobra livre d'artiste. Entirely printed in
dark blue with the text/score by Henrichsen and Jacobson integrated within Reiff's
abstractions. Portrait' appears to prefigure the intermedial and collaborative
ideals that Cobra would later carry through both by action and in print. Perhaps,
only Jorn and Nash's Salvi Dylvo' (per melding of text to image) makes such
an implied statement of new aims. Both books were coincidentally printed by
J.Chr. Sorenson. It is also interesting to note that Reiff's monochromatic scheme
(here) pre-dates Yves Klein's removed to IKB (solely) and his manifest self-monograph
Yves Peintures' by nearly a decade. A close to fine example. Far rarer than
the limitation would suggest.

pre-Zurich Dada poems by Tzara (dating from 1914-15). One of only 230 numbered
copies issued (preceded by a du tete of 13). Former owner's ink name at half-title,
minor underscoring in pencil on two pages, else a very good example. Rare.

GRAINS ET ISSUES.
Paris: Denoel et Stele, 1935.
14.5 x 17.5 cm. 317 pp. Printed wrappers. First edition of Tzara's most ambitious
prose work of his Surrealist period. A meditation on the manifest possibilities
of "the dream" as a revolutionary (in the definitive Surrealist sense)
means to an end, and end in itself. This example is one of 150 hors commerce
copies (from a total edition of 1200) Roman-numeraled, and inscribed by Tzara
to his fellow "former" Surrealist Georges Sadoul, the pioneering film
theoretician. A close to fine and primarily uncut example with a more than exceptional
association.

Veroni,

STRUGGLE FOR LIFE/LUCHA POR LA VIDA
Glasgow: MMI, 2000
11.2 x 17cm artists book 16pp plus wrappers and silkscreened dj. Content of
one silkscreen multiple object within a laid in plastic sleeve - namely an Argentinian
"Un Peso" banknote note over-printed by seriography with an image of death.
Descriptive text by Veroni and illustrations of all 16 variations of printed
note. Veroni's examination of the effects of hyper-inflation on the economies
of South America is telling - the skeletal imagery on the "deceased" currency
reinforces the politics. Signed and numbered from an edition of 200.

Zurn,
Unica & Max Ernst.
UNICA ZURN: Dessins - Gouaches 9-31 Janvier, 1962. Text by
Max Ernst.
Paris: Le Point Cardinal, 1962. 27.5 x 71cm (unfolded) single card sheet comprising
four sections. Content of an original b/w engraving by Zurn signed in the plate
(originally produced in 1954) and three panels of text-images by Max Ernst (his
singular unreadable script). Printed self-wrappers. A scarce catalogue with
a collaborative design. Zurn was Hans Bellmer's companion and model from the
1950's until her death by suicide, and one of the most gifted Surrealist-affiliated
authors of the post-WWII era. Ernst's obsessive pictorial signage accompanies
an attractive semi-abstract work by Zurn. Laid into this example is the original
invitation for the program; composed of the poem 'Dans les Bois d'Ermenoville'
and a reproduction of an exhibited drawing (again) by Zurn. A fine example of
this ephemeral piece.
