Bachelard,
Gaston.
LA TERRE ET LES REVERIES DE LA VOLONTE.
Paris: Corti, 1948.
8vo. Original wrappers. First edition (preceded by only 30 large paper copies)
of this crucial phenomenological excursion by the gifted psychoanalyst thinker
cum literary theoretician. BachelardÕs exquisitely personal text analyses are
in the reading associative alchemical evocations of the word as outwardly projected
and simultaneously internalized animate signifier within any given territory
("a reverie is inseparable from the language in which it is dreamed", par example).
This copy with a superb 2pp. autographed letter from the author to the modernist
poet Noel Bureau, in response to the latter having sent Bachelard a series of
poems, which may be of interest thematically to his ongoing work, and which
(in his always exacting style) Bachelard discusses indirectly, among other topics.
This ALS has been carefully tipped onto the free-flyleaf of the volume, and
neatly unfolds for examination. The volume itself exhibits some minor wear to
wrappers, else is in very good estate. Substantial articles of correspondence
from Bachelard do not often appear on the market. Unique thus.

LES CHAMPS MAGNETIQUES.
Paris: Au sans Pareil, 1920.
8vo. 120pp. Original wrappers. The 'stated' second issue (of 120 copies), following
(about three months before) the first edition of 180 examples. Produced in late
1919, while both authors were engaged in the Parisian Dada adventure. This work
was directly influenced by their crucial (to the Surrealist family tree that
is) re-reading of Lautremont's 'Chants de Maldoror' and 'Poesies'; the latter
which Breton had copied out by hand from the (then) only known copy of the first
edition deposited in the Bibliotheque Nationale. 'Les Champs Magnetiques' is
(traditionally) considered to be the inaugural Surrealist text collection, as
it embodies the later movement's automatic/mediumistic methodology. Chronologically,
this is Breton's second published book and Soupault's third. Some minor wear
to wrappers, typical internal browning (owing to stock quality), else a very

excellent companion text work to the latter. Some minor sunning to wrappers,

L'IMMACULEE CONCEPTION.
Paris: Editions Surrealistes, 1930.
19 x 24cm. 124pp. Pictorial wrappers designed by Salvador Dali. First edition
of this, one of the most important collaborative Surrealist works. In part,
an attempt to simulate various psychic disorders, in order to demonstrate not
only the apparent non-existence of barriers between the 'normal' and 'abnormal',
but also the capacity of the mind to exceed by poetic means, the conventional
boundaries of 'normal' thought. "If the First and Second (Surrealist) Manifestos
are the exposition of the manifest content of the Surrealist dream, 'The Immaculate
Conception' is its latent content". (Breton). One of 2000 examples on papier
imponderable des papeteries Sorel-Moussel, apart from 116 'du tete'. The cover
design by Dali is reproduced at the title page, and the artist's 'paranoic-critical
method' definitely informed Breton and Eluard's experiments herein. An unusually
fine example of this keynote publication.

Paris: Arcanes, 1953. 8vo. 236pp. Three b/w images by Wolfgang Paalen. Original
wrappers with pictorial design (also) by Paalen. First edition thus of GautierÕs
important translation of these darkly humored tales by the visionary German
Romantic, as introduced by Breton and pictorially ÔsignifiedÕ by Paalen. Early

LE SURREALISME REVOLUTIONNAIRE.
No. 1 (all published).
Paris: Le Bureau International du Surrealisme Revolutionnarie, 1948.
21 x 29 cm .
48pp. 28 b/w illustrations. Tri-color printed wrappers. The first and only issue
of this 'renegade' Surrealist journal. The Surrealisme Revolutionnaire group
was co-founded by Christian Dotremont (Brussels) & Noel Arnaud (Paris) in June
of 1947 with the publication of the pamphlet 'Pas de Quartiers dans la Revolution!'
(text by Dotremont and Jean Seeger), which was co-signed by Marcel Broodthaers,
Irene Hamoir, Rene Magritte, Paul Nouge, among others. The group was also responsible
for the infamous interventionist catalogue-response to the monumental international
Surrealist exhibition ('Surrealisme en 1947') held in Paris in 1947; a biting
attack upon the established group's conformity to tried and true activities
and styles. 'Le Surrealisme Revolutionnaire' is composed of texts by Broodthaers,
Achille Chavee, Dotremont, Paul Colinet, Edouard Jaguer, Raymond Queneau, Tristan
Tzara, et. al., and illustrations by Max Bucaille, Asger Jorn, Richard Mortenson,
among others. A considerable document of the polemic schism between Surrealist
generations and old comrades and the early manifestations of Cobra group activity.
The text contribution by Broodthaers is one of his earliest published pieces
(preceding his first book of poems by nine years). A very good+ example of this
scarce and fragile journal.

Moore dÕapres les projets de LÕAuteur. Preface par Pierre Mac Orlan.
Paris: Carrefour, 1930.
Large 8vo. 237pp. 9 full-page duotone photomontages + one photograph (as afterword).
Wrappers with a three-color typographic design (back and front) incorporating
the title and authorÕs name in various combinations. First edition of the author
and artistÕs second book (preceded only by the bibliographic rarity ÔVues et
VisionsÕ, 1919). One of 445 numbered examples (total edition). Arguably, the
most mysterious figure of the Surrealist milieu, Cahun brought an intense sexual
ambivalence, dissidence, and broad sense of the absurd to both her Surrealist
writings and work in photography and montage. The photomontages included here
incorporate many self-portraits, which are manipulated and in one instance repeated
as many eight times. This project was carried out by Cahun in collaboration
with her long time companion Moore (Suzanne Malherbe). In 1939 Cahun exiled
herself to the island of Jersey, where she was still living as of the mid-50Õs.

Executed while still in her ÔteenÕsÕ, the works offered here represent some of CarringtonÕs earliest (extant) stylistic investigations. In 1937 Carrington joined the Surrealist group. Within this milieu, her well-documented and tumultuous romantic and decisive creative collaborations with Max Ernst were founded. This is notable, given that the pieces offered here were initially possessed by Max Ernst, and thus could (possibly) be considered as gestural gifts. In any speculative event, such early works by Carrington are a rare and wonderful documentary find. Images upon request.

OT CUBIZMA I FUTURIZMA K SUPREMATIZMU. Novyi Zhivopisnyi realizm.
Moscow: self-published, 1916.
12.8 x 18 cm. 31 (+3)pp. Two inserted letterpress plates (black circle on gray
square & black square on gray square) by Malevich. Original stapled yellow-hued
wrappers printed with title and black square design by the author/artist. The
ÔstatedÕ third edition (revised, enlarged and illustrated) after the first issue
of 1915 of this landmark theoretical work, which contains the inaugural imprint
of MalevichÕs ÔSuprematist squareÕ. The aforementioned first issue had been
published by Edition Crane (ÔZhurviÕ) in St. Petersburg in the preceding months
(Dec., 1915) in two identical versions sans illustrations, and upon the occasion
of the ÔZero-tenÕ exhibition in Petrograd. Here, MalevichÕs ÔBlack SquareÕ was
publicly displayed for the first time. Again, there are marked differences between
this ÔstatedÕ third edition, and that of the first; as to the formerÕs inserted
images, manner of printing and number of copies (see Karshan 24, p. 119 for
a reliable reference to the description of the item offered here). Some minor
wear to wrappers, else a very good example of this historic work.

LES
GISANTS SATISFAITS.
Paris: Pauvert, 1958.
8vo. 240pp. Textual illustrations in b/w by Max Walter Svanberg. Wrappers with
a pictorial design by Svanberg. First trade edition of this remarkable Surrealist
narrative. Mansour was arguably the most important female proponent of the movement's
aims after WWII. Les Gisants Satisfaits is nothing less than a post-modern melding
of eroticism (in extremis) and Feminist discourse. Svanberg's images more than
complement the complex alchemy of Mansour's text. Laid into this example is
the rare pre-publication prospectus (1pp., 22.5 x 30cm), inclusive of four striking
photo-portraits of Mansour framed by poetic text; recto with elogious reviews
from fellow Surrealists, including Andre Breton. Both pieces in very good+ condition.

L'IMITATION DE CINEMA.
Antwerp: Max Pisti Editions, 1991.
Video. B/w. Sound. 36 min. PAL/VHS. Signed and numbered by the filmmaker. Boxed.
First issue of this video edition of the Belgian Surrealist author, artist and
publisher's scandalous experimental film of 1960. At once hilarious, blatantly
erotic, and a strident attack upon the Catholic church (a long-lived favorite
target of the Surrealists). "L'Imitation" was subject to counter-attacks
from the press and interdiction by the French government at the time of its
release. Perhaps, the last great film of the Surrealist epoch. Sound score by
the poet Andre Souris. One of only 200 examples signed and numbered by Marien.
