A COLLECTION OF 10 PAPERBACKS FROM SFINX WITH PHOTOMONTAGE COVERS BY STYRSKY

Uniformly 20 x 14cm, pagination varies c. 160 - 200pp per book. Original photomontage wrappers. A small collection of 10 individual books from a series of foreign writers translated into Czech (some for the first time) - the books are notable for the covers all of which have a similar  house  design by Stysky - namely a red banner title band with a portrait of the author and below that a photomontage or single reproduced photograph usually taken from silent movie stills or an amalgam of elements from such stills. During the late 20s and early 30s, Stysky worked with the publisher on these  Sfinx devitkoruna  publications (of which there were over 60 produced) and designed the vast majority of the covers without any book credit being noted. All are with browned internal pages (cheap paper) although the Zola and the Zajceva are mostly uncut examples. The wrappers are scuffed and with some edge wear and tears along fold lines but mostly these are very good examples of cheaply produced books. There is minor spine wear on most although all show cracking due to the poor perfect binding techniques employed. Nonetheless a nice small collection displaying Stysky s commercial work.
