GALLERY HANDOUT FOR SURREALISME EN 1947

£125.00

Paris: Galerie Maeght, n.d. (1947)
23 x 18.5cm, 4pp. Textual handout / catalogue for a large post-war surrealist group show with the participation of Duchamp, Matta, Arp, Sage, Penrose, Man Ray, Gorky, Brauner, Tanning, Maddox, Trouille, Scottie (Wilson?), Herold, Collinet, Brunius, Teige, Waldberg, Picabia, Hirschfield, Heisler, Lam, Rimmington, Bellmer, Styrsky, Riopelle, Miro, Ernst, Freddie and Tanguy amongst others. All 113 works are listed by participant and medium and the country of origin but without title. The cheap paper is very heavily browned and there is one very small corner missing on one page (less than 0.3cm) otherwise VG. This important exhibition was conceived as a de facto re-launch of the surrealist brand and Frederick Kiesler arrived from New York to hang/curate the stand-alone "salle de superstitions" where the setting itself was surreal with an egg shaped room draped in green and installations by Ernst, Hare, Miro, Matta, Duchamp, Kiesler, Martin-Stahli, Ernst, Serpan, Brauner, Herald, Toyen and others as noted here on the last page of the catalogue. A scarce document.
