L'OPPOSITION ET LES CASES CONJUGUEES SONT RECONCILIEZS PAR M. DUCHAMP & V. HALTERSTADT
Editions de L, 1932
28 x 24.5cm, 115pp. Original wrappers. Two errata sheets and additional sheets of diagrams laid in as issued. The first edition of this conceptual artwork in the form of chess book: here the problem analysed in great depth and seriouslness with diagrams relates to an unlikely endgame where the Kings are forced to move without error time and time again to avoid stalemate by repetition and yet potentially win the game should the opponent make an incautious move. The title refers to the "opposition and sister squares being reconciled." It is reasonable to suggest this was really conceived as an artwork by Duchamp as the only alternative interpretation is that of a dry academic and intellectual consideration of little interest to normal humans not even most chess grandmasters and after all this is Duchamp.... Oh.
Very good condition, limitation is unknown but usually assumed to have been c. 1,000 unnumbered copies. Rare nontheless.
