MESENS 125 COLLAGES & OBJETS
Knokke-La-Zoute (Belgium): XVIe Festival Belge d'ete / Belgisch zomerfestival, 1963
24.2 x 19cm, 32pp plus pictorial card covers. Exhibition catalogue for a large scale show that Mesens was able to arrange through his contacts following successful (perhaps the gallery director's only successful) shows on Picasso and Magritte at the Casino in Knokke. George Melly notes that the exhibition was of major importance to Mesens who was financially challenged after his years at the London Gallery where his constant antagonism to Roland Penrose and an inability to sell surrealism in the UK led to the eventual closure of the gallery. 126 works are noted as being on display and 16 b/w images of works and 2 in full colour are joined by a photographic portrait of the artist wearing a false moustache. A long biographical essay by Jacques Brunius in French is followed by various adverts before the back page reproduces a telegram from Marcel Duchamp sent to Mesens in Le Zoute with a punning text: “SALISSEZ (PROUNOUNCE: SALLY SAYS)/ MESENS' CHAUSSETTES (PRONOUNCE: SHOW SET) FOR JULY AND AUGUST” with Duchamp's facsimile signature. This is the only publication where this work can be seen and it probably should be regarded as an original page work by Duchamp in the same way that the latter's covers for (say) Transition magazine are regarded as artworks. This example of the catalogue is in very good condition with only minor marks to the wrappers and on the inside front page is dedicated in green ink by Mesens dated 1967. Scarce and aside from the dedication, the Duchamp work should be more commonly recognised than it is.
