NINE NUMBERS OF VARIETES REVUE MENSUELLE ILLUSTREE + ENCLOSURES

£950.00

VARIETES. REVUE MENSUELLE ILLUSTREE DE L'ESPRIT CONTEMPORAIN . 1RE ANNEE NRS 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 12.  2E ANNE NR 3. (25 = ALL) Bruxelles: Editions Varietes, May 15, 1928 to 15 July 1929  Nine separate numbers. Uniformly 25 x 18cm, Pagination varies per. An incomplete but more than reasonable run of this art and literature journal which while not specifically surrealist by any means had links to the Belgium group and some of the Parisian group: Magritte for instance produced the publicity for the journal and many of his works are reproduced in the pages of the continuing magazine. That said this is of great documentary value to most of the avant garde movements of the era with contributions in these nine numbers including writings from Georgette Camille, Andre de Ridder, Paul Fierens, Franz Hellens, Robert Guiette, Philippe Soupault, Maurice de Vlamnick,  E.L.T. Mesens, Ribemont-Dessaignes amongst others.  Illustrations by Jean Lurcat, James Ensor, Frits van der Berghe, Gustave de Smet, Edgar Tytgat, Andre Lhote, Marc Chagall, Frans Masereel, Mambour, George Grosz and as previousdly mentioned Magritte. Additonally there are illustrations after Moholy-Nagy, Man Rayand  Eli Lotar for example. All copies contain advertising - some of which display commercial work by Dufy and Magritte. The copies are mostly very good but there are condition issues on most - some marks and browning to the wrappers and often minor spine damage with paper loses of varying annoyance (at most 4 cm in any place). The first number (which is quite rare) has  tears along with spine for about 14cm from the bottom and another from the top of 4cm but the cover is still attached and internally all is very good and all others are firmly attached between text blocks and the covers. One number has a little rust on the staples which has come through the paper to the front as brown stains. Internally all are VG+ to fine. The 1ne nr 2 issue is stamped "Specimen" on the front wrapper. The 1ne nr 9 has some marginal red ink marks over a few pages. All in all, this is a good if admittedly incomplete collection but copies are not easily found online and are usually priced far more than this collection is available for.
