PAGANY A NATIVE QUARTERLY. Volume 1 Numbers 2, 3, 4 (Spring, Summer and Fall 1930)
Boston: Pagany, 1930
3 separate numbers. Uniformly 23.6 x 16cm. Pagination is 120pp, 98pp and 126pp respectively. Original paper wrappers. A short, continuous if incomplete run of this lively magazine which published all the greats of American literature and a few French imports such as Hugnet. Nr 2 has amongst others: William Carlos Williams (Four bottles of beer), Louis Zukofsky, Sidney Hunt and a letter from Paris in the original French by Georges Hugnet an interesting and important text of painting and post-cubism. Nr 3 has Williams again (the first chapter of The White Mule), Gertrude Stein (a short text piece in her inimitable style which is a putative review of a soon to be published novel but ends up a challenging and mostly successful attempt to use language experimentally), Robert McAlmon, Erskine Caldwell and Hugnet's regular letter - a consideration of French experimental theatre. Number 4's Williams' work consists of two poems (Flowers by the sea and Sea-trout and Butterfish), Louis Zukofsky, Paul Bowles, Charles Reznikoff, Charles Henri Ford (a short text work - Roundtrip) all contribute and Hugnet is here again - a lengthy reprint of his lecture given in Brussels in 1929 on the cinema. We believe that the magazine lasted for three volumes with four numbers each year - 12 numbers in all. The magazines have very interesting adverts - for Morada, Transition, Blues, Black Sun press and in nr 4 - an full page advert for Tzara's L'Arbre des Voyageurs. Some wear to extremities of wrappers and very minor tears to spines which are also sunned but overall here are three very good numbers from this compelling magazine.

Price is for all 3 numbers together. We may split this set - do enquire.
