(Scottish Devolution)
REFERENDUM WHISKY
Edinburgh: Scotland Forward, 1998
30 x 8 cm dia. approx standard whisky bottle specially bottled for and sold by the "Yes" Campaign during the 1998 Scottish Home Rule referendum to raise funds and to spread the message amongst Scotland's drinking classes. The label was specially designed for the Yes campaign and has the textual element: "Referendum/Blended/Scotch Whisky/Say "AYE" to a Scottish Parliament/"Freedom and Whisky gang the-gither"/Robert Burns". Only 200 bottles were produced and sold during the campaign - and a good number were (unsurprisingly) imbibed soon after purchase and many more, anecdotally, after the result was announced at the celebrations. This bottle, however, is clearly signed on the front label in blue ink by Donald Dewar - Scotland's very first, First Minister. Only 10 bottles were officially signed in such a way - only 4 of the ten bottles were signed by all the political leaders within the 'Yes' coalition and the other 6 had single signatures by each of the leaders of the political parties supportive of the campaign (Jim Wallace, Alex Salmond, Donald Dewar) of which this is one. Clear provenance on request (this bottle was a gift to Paul (Pablo) Robertson from the campaign for his help is designing and printing campaign materials and also for funding a light airplane trailing a banner urging a yes vote over central Scotland on referendum day). Dewar tragically died during his tenure as First MInister not long after the referendum. As a result this is a very rare object from Scotland's recent history. Fine condition.
