John Byrne

SELF PORTRAIT. UNIQUE WATERCOLOUR, 1998.

£6,995.00

64 x 42cm, large watercolour in frame (72 x 55cm). The image is of the Scottish author, playwright, filmmaker and artist standing in on a beach setting holding two lizards and (no surprise to Byrne watchers) smoking. The painting was made during a period where the painter and playwright was living in the Far East while Byrne's partner, the actress, Tilda Swinton was making 'The Beach' alongside Leonardo Di Caprio. The influence of Scottish cubism is apparent in Byrne's treatment of his full-size self-portrait. One of the most admired works exhibited in the recent "60 years retrospective" in Byrne's home town of Paisley, this is a significant and stunning work by one of the UK's most important living artists. In original painted frame. Extremely fine condition.
